TATA OPEN INDIA INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE 2017

CCI hosted the 10th edition of The Tata Open India International Challenge from

2 th Nov to 3rd Dec for the eighth consecutive year. The tournament was conducted by the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy under the auspices of the Maharashtra Badminton Association and Badminton Association of India.

Players from 8 countries, including India participated; the event turned out to be a cracker from the first day, with the top seed in Men’s Singles being knocked out by the eventual winner. A few of our international stars also participated but were outplayed. The women’s singles was an all India affair with the experienced Gadde Ruthvika Shivani beating Riya Mukherjee. The Men’s Singles featured our very own Lakshya Sen (currently ranked World No. 3 in Juniors) against Sitthikom Thammasin from Thailand. Lakshya won the first game easily with his deftly placed smashes; however Sitthikom Thammasin drew on all his experience to claim the next two games and emerge victorious in a three game thriller 21-19. The Men’s Doubles turned out to be one sided with the Thai pair of Maneepong Jongjit and Nanthakarn Yordphaisong proving too strong for the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. The Women’s Doubles & Mixed Doubles were an all Hong Kong affair with Yeung Nga Ting winning both events with Ng Tsz Yau and Hee Chun Mak respectively.

The Finals were covered live by Doordarshan. Prakash Padukone, CCI President Kekoo Nicholson and Vice Chairman-Badminton Ranjeet Vaswani were interviewed by Doordarshan.
